Executive Presence
There’s been a lot of buzz about executive presence. But, what is it really?
Would you know it if you see it? Do you know it when you feel it? Have you been passed over for a promotion or a new job because you didn’t exude executive presence?
According to Bates Communications executive presence is the blending of temperament, competencies, and skills that, when combined, send all the right signals.
Some of the elements identified with executive presence are communication, appearance, body language, poise, substance, confidence, decisiveness, integrity, emotional intelligence, and charisma. When put together, these elements mean success.
Though key to getting ahead in all elements of life, executive presence can be elusive. It can also be especially confusing for women leaders. Sylvia Hewlett in her book Executive Presence defines the Fine Line of Executive Presence, citing that female leaders have little latitude when it comes to getting it right.
For example, how do you define the difference between being assertive and aggressive? Using that same thought process, how this definition differs between men and women? Does executive presence decline if you are perceived as too young or too old? How do you build capital and presence to reach your goals?
These waters can be difficult to navigate, but well-worth your time to investigate. Though cannot happen overnight, it CAN happen.
